Once you are happy with your work, Typora has a myriad of options for exporting it into different formats, from Word and PDF to Pandoc and ePub. This means it’s easy to put a longer project in a folder and bounce between different chapters, as well as storing your notes, outlines, character descriptions etc in a subfolder. But it does have features which support the creation of long documents, including a sidebar which can be set to show all the files in the folder (and any subfolders) that your current document is saved in, as well as an outline of the current file based on the Markdown headings. Typora doesn’t have the long document capabilities of something like Scrivener, which allows you to writer different sections of a long work in a single document, storing all your notes and reordering at your leisure. But what I like about it is that if you’re not a tinkerer, you can just use it straight away without having to customise anything, and it will look good and get you writing. It would be easy to tinker with Typora and spend hours just how you like it. You can create your own themes using CSS and there is an online theme gallery which includes lots more.įor those who like to set up their writing environment to exactly their needs, Typora includes a swathe of customisation options, from turning off or on support for different extensions to Markdown such as inline math or diagrams through to smart hyphenation and punctuation and a lot more. They include Night, a simple white-on-dark-grey theme that is very readable and that I like using a lot. Typora also supports themes, and the six themes included are of a high quality. Focus and typewriter modes, together, make that kind of distraction almost impossible. When you are knocking out a draft, it’s helpful to focus only on the words you’re writing rather than letting your eyes drift up and down the page, where you will inevitably spot errors and things you want to change or correct. This is the best way to draft documentsĬombined these two features make Typora a powerful tool for writing a first draft. Typewriter mode keeps the line you’re typing in the centre of the screen, again improving the focus.
Focus mode fades all the paragraphs other than the one you are working on, allowing you to “focus” just on the writing. The second (and third) features that I love are the inclusion of both focus and typewriter modes, both of which can be on at the same time.

I disagree, as I prefer the code to be hidden while I’m writing and editing (I’m a writer, not a coder), but for those who prefer Jason’s approach Typora includes a source code mode which turns off live preview. Amongst Markdown cognoscenti, this is a controversial thing: my friend Jason Snell, for example, hates applications which hide the Markdown code from you. When you add italics, for example, you see the text italicised on screen. But there are several features which I think make Typora a better package for writing Markdown than a plain text editor. Why not use a plain text editor rather than something which is dedicated to Markdown? You can, of course, do this - and if you have a text editor that you love using, then you should.

That's because Typora has been in beta and available for free for seven years, which might not be a record for a product staying in beta (hello Gmail!) but comes close. If you want a simple, good looking and reliable Markdown editor on Windows, this is the one to get. Up till now there hasn't been a Markdown editor for Windows which I've thought was good enough to recommend but thankfully now Typora has come out of its beta phase that's no longer true.

I searched high and low for a replacement to the Mac OS default Notes app, which is incredibly limited in functionality and insufficient for my needs. IA Writer Like many Markdown editors, iA Writer goes in for the “minimal” approach to text editing.
Here are the best Markdown editors for anyone running macOS. I find myself using it as my primary tool for editing any kind of text file on my iPhone.
